Communications and Marketing Internships


The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for publicizing and marketing all of Wolf Trap's programs and for ensuring a strong and consistent corporate image throughout all materials and promotional pieces relating to Wolf Trap.

Marketing

Available: Summer

Job Description

  •  Assist with establishment and implementation of promotions with radio and print partners
  •  Order and traffic tour radio spots
  •  Proof and edit print advertising as necessary
  •  Conduct market research surveys
  •  Handle direct mail projects
  •  Write and track weekly email updates
  •  Explore areas for expanding exposure for Wolf Trap
  •  Increase exposure for Wolf Trap Education Programs in order to drive attendance

Advertising Sales/Group Sales

Available: Spring, Summer

Job Description

  •  Generate advertising leads and compile prospect lists
  •  Update and maintain current advertising contact/prospect and agency lists
  •  Compile competitive publication market analysis
  •  Prepare media kits
  •  Prepare contracts for group sales, interact over the phone and in person with group leaders, take group ticket orders, distribute tickets, and assist in book-keeping and invoicing customers
  •  Research market expansion ideas and strategies
  •  Increase exposure among the tourism industry associations, conferences, visitors centers, tour groups, Virginia Tourism Corporation, MD, DC, PA, NY, DE—Rehoboth, Richmond, etc.—throughout the local community and the region

Requirements

  •  Strong customer service skills, creativity, and initiative
  •  Knowledge of Microsoft Access helpful

Graphic Design

Available: Spring, Summer

Job Description

  •  Create, produce, and layout advertisements and biographies for newspapers and magazines, including The Washington Post, City Paper, and Center Lines
  •  Design and produce other promotional pieces, including brochures, postcards, and posters

Requirements

  •  Proficiency in QuarkXpress and Adobe Creative Suite using Macintosh platform
  •  Graphic design students preferred
  •  Knowledge of scanning and image correction techniques and Photoshop
  •  Ability to juggle several projects simultaneously
  •  Strong proofreading skills a plus
  •  Please include three design samples with your application

Web Communications

Available: Spring, Summer, Fall 

Job Description

  •  Help to maintain existing website content and develop new content
  •  Assist with development of communication strategy for the website and email marketing
  •  Create and prepare HTML files and graphics
  •  Assist in development of new media including flash movies and sound clips

Requirements

  •  Awareness of Internet field and World Wide Web
  •  Good writing/editing skills
  •  Basic HTML and Adobe Photoshop experience
  •  Web-related applications (e.g. Macromedia Flash) experience and knowledge of e-marketing strategy a plus
  •  Please submit two electronic samples with your application

Publications

Available: Spring, Summer

Job Description

  •  Research, write, and edit artist biographies for publication in Wolf Trap programs
  •  Manage publicity materials
  •  Assist with in-house publications, including brochures, newsletters, and annual reports
  •  Format and send weekly Email Updates
  •  Work closely with Media Relations Intern to proofread and edit copy

Requirements

  •  Strong copywriting skills
  •  English, Communications, or Journalism majors preferred
  •  Working knowledge or interest in developing page layout skills

Public Relations

Available: Spring, Summer

Job Description

  •  Write, edit, and distribute press releases
  •  Assist in the coordination of press attendance at events and performances
  •  Write promotional articles and artist biographies
  •  Assist in development and implementation of PR strategies for coverage of Foundation projects
  •  Respond to queries from both press and public
  •  Work closely with Publications Intern to proofread and edit copy

Requirements

  •  Strong ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  •  Public Relations, Journalism, or Arts Administration majors/ backgrounds preferred

Photography

Available: Summer

Job Description

  •  Produce photographic documentation of the season, including performances, special events, Master Classes, backstage activities, architecture, audience, and staff for promotional/corporate use
  •  Assist professional photographer during contracted shoots
  •  Compile all photographs with proper recognition for Wolf Trap archives to be used in a variety of publications
  •  Build upon and maintain Wolf Trap's existing photo database

Requirements

  •  Access to basic camera equipment, including: 35mm camera—a digital camera would be helpful; a variety of lenses, including a fast 300 mm+ for stage shots; tripod; flash; filters might be necessary for interior color shots
  • Handle different lighting situations
  •  Flexible work schedule (nights and weekends required)
  •  Knowledge of or interest in digital photography
  •  Portfolio required at time of interview

Multimedia

Available: Spring, Summer, Fall

Job Description

  •  Work closely with Wolf Trap staff, technology consultants, and mentors working in the technology field to utilize the latest multimedia technology to help promote Wolf Trap's arts and education programs to a broader audience
  •  Shoot and edit photos and video for use on website
  •  Contribute to new interactive features for the website including internet radio, podcasts, RSS feeds, and distance-learning opportunities
  •  Process audio clips for the website
  •  Work closely with the Web Staff to develop internet marketing strategies
  •  Assist with on-site multimedia communications including interactive kiosks and Flash and Power Point presentations

Requirements

  • Knowledge of video, graphics, audio, and web editing software packages
  •  Past video production experience preferred
  •  Flexible work schedule (nights and weekends required)
  •  Please submit three varied multimedia samples with your application
